Batik it’s an Indonesian word, where “ba-” means cotton, and “-tik” means dot or drop. The Indonesian meaning of the verb “ambatik” is to draw or pearl. Wax, paraffin, rubber adhesive, different petroleum composition and proportion are usually used while the batik technique; their main purpose is to prevent the colour extension beyond the distinct outline.
The golden age of the Indonesian Batik was in 17th century. At that time the clothes in batik technique were the symbol of hierarchical differences in Indonesia. The pattern and the colour-grade determined the man’s social status. The honorable women in the governor palace performed only the pattern design, the patterning on the cloth and the first wax coating. And craftsmen performed hard works under the reeves’ watch. The batik manufacturing secrets were passed on from generation to generation and didn’t go beyond the palace walls for a long time.
In the 17th century Indonesia became the Holland colony in the meantime batik was first introduced to Europe. In 1900 works in batik technique, created a sensation, were firstly presented at the Paris International Exhibition. Batik took the rightful place in the European interior design industry at the end of the twenty century.
